Sandblasting

One of the most commonly performed professional hygiene procedures in the oral cavity is the sandblasting of teeth. It involves the removal of dental plaque and superficial staining using a device called a sandblaster. It is a complementary treatment to scaling (plaque removal).

The benefits of sandblasting are:

  • the elimination of discolorations;
  • the removal of bacterial plaque deposits;
  • cleaning the interdental spaces;
  • a longer feeling of cleanliness and freshness;
  • a whiter smile.

Who should undergo sandblasting:

  • smokers;
  • frequent coffee and tea drinkers;
  • patients with orthodontic appliances;
  • patients with crowded teeth;
  • patients who have decided to undergo teeth whitening, etc.

Sandblasting is a prophylactic treatment and should be performed every six months, and in some people even every three months.

Regularly subjecting the teeth to sandblasting, to remove small deposits and discolorations, will prevent the growth of bacteria, tooth and gum diseases and will maintain the aesthetic appearance of the teeth.

The AIR-FLOW® ONE sandblaster (the type that we use at the clinic) is used for sandblasting at the level of the gingiva and supra-and sub-gingivally as well as for cleaning implants without damaging them. Depending on the depth of the gingival pockets being cleaned, one of the two nozzle types can be used. In shallow pockets (up to 4mm) a traditional nozzle is used, while in deeper pockets (5-10mm) a nozzle of a specially designed, disposable, thermoplastic elastomer (perio-flow) is used.

The advantage of this sandblasting technique is its rapid performance and painlessness, as well as a long-lasting effect.

NOVELTY!!!

 Subgingival sandblasting - a new standard in prophylaxis of tertiary periodontitis.

The emergence of the new AIR FLOW POWDER PLUS sand - abrasive sand containing erythritol and chlorhexidine has created new possibilities to remove the biofilm from the area of the teeth and roots, which was impossible until now!!!!

Despite the sweet taste, it is not cariogenic and is safe for patients with diabetes. In nature, it occurs in fungi, fruits, sea algae, as well as in fermentation products such as cheese, wine or beer.

It does not contain sodium, so it is not a contraindication in patients on a low sodium diet with hypertension and renal dysfunction.

The removal of subgingival biofilm (perio-flow) in patients with periodontitis is repeated many times in the maintenance phase. This method prevents excessive loss of hard tooth tissue, if the procedure is regularly carried out during the maintenance phase and reduces tooth sensitivity to physical stimuli.

An additional advantage is the ability to regulate the temperature of the water, which is associated with less hypersensitivity during the procedure (mainly it will be noticeable in people with exposed cervical parts of the teeth), as well as air-polishing, which is associated with a shorter treatment time.

Contraindications to sandblasting:

  • respiratory system diseases (asthma, bronchitis, pneumoconiosis);
  • Inflammatory states in the gingiva or oral cavity;
  • Allergies to the powder ingredients.
