Teeth caps (called aligners) are a type of removable orthodontic appliances. They take the form of transparent, aesthetic and comfortable to use arches made of special plastic. The overlays are individually designed for the patient's specific bite based on intraoral scans and computer visualizations.
Overlays are most often used to treat small and medium malocclusions, such as diastema or crowding of teeth, although under direct supervision and with the participation of an orthodontist, they can also be effective for more complicated malocclusions(deep bite, anterior overbite, open bite, crossbite). In this case, it may be necessary to use additional biomechanical techniques to minimize the limitations of overlays.
Overlays are considered a more comfortable method than fixed appliances, more aesthetic, more precise and faster, as they do not cause unnecessary tooth movement. In terms of cost and treatment time, they can generally be considered comparable to treatment with traditional braces. The overlays are worn around the clock removing them for meals and during oral hygiene.
Treatment with orthodontic overlays begins in the same way as standard orthodontic treatment with fixed braces. The diagnostic stage includes taking radiographs, photographs and performing intraoral scans. After tooth preparation, which includes possible conservative treatment and professional cleaning, the patient accepts the developed treatment plan.
It is estimated that there are now more than 200 overlay systems in the world, with both well-established brands (such as Invisalign® and Clear Correct) and small start-ups among them. We recommend two major overlay systems to our patients: INVISALIGN® and CA® CLEAR ALIGNER.
INVISALIGN®
Invisalign is the world's pioneering and most widespread orthodontic overlay system, which has been on the market for more than 20 years and whose effectiveness is supported by clinical studies. To date, more than 10 million patients have benefited from this method.
Invisalign clear overlays have a discreet appearance and are ideally suited to the dentition of a particular patient. The trays should be worn around the clock with breaks for meals and oral hygiene and the trays themselves.
The patient receives a set of trays designed for the entire treatment and changes them independently every 1-2 weeks. The treatment is monitored on an ongoing basis by the dentist in the dental office according to a set schedule of follow-up visits.
The number of follow-up visits is kept to a minimum (every 8-10 weeks). The length of Invisalign treatment is similar to that of fixed braces. After the orthodontic treatment is completed, retention braces are used to prevent the recurrence of the defect.
Invisalign® overlays are recommended both for patients with minor malocclusions (crowding, spartanism) and those facing more complicated problems. This is possible, among other things, thanks to a range of system attachments (so-called attachements): buttons, tabs and hooks, which, under the doctor's control, affect the impact of the overlay surface on the tooth.
The solution can be used both by adults and adolescents, for whom a special version of the Invisalign Teen® product has been created. In addition to this version, there are several other treatment options with the Invisalign® system: i7, Lite or Full. Each differs in price and indications. Choosing the right option requires discussion with the treating orthodontist.
Any patient interested in Invisalign® treatment can take advantage of a free visualization of their smile with straight teeth at Check your appearance with straight teeth | Invisalign SmileView | Invisalign by uploading a photo. With the mobile app, Invisalign patients can keep track of treatment progress and share "before" and "after" photos. Treatment can be supported by the Dental Monitoring monitoring system.
Orthodontic Overlays for Children INVISALIGN FIRST
As the child grows, we can influence the correction of the bite, and some defects should even be treated as early as possible. In this way, we can avoid unpleasant and serious consequences, such as the need for surgical intervention and extraction of healthy permanent teeth in the future. Early orthodontic treatment is supported by such tools as specialized Invisalign First orthodontic trays.
Invisalign First overlays are an effective and child-friendly solution adapted to the needs and physiology of the youngest children who are before or in the process of teeth replacement. The clear, removable trays have many advantages and benefits over traditional metal removable braces, and can be used just as effectively to affect tooth placement.
Invisalign First treatment begins with a non-invasive intraoral scan, from which the child can see the image on a monitor. This is a much more pleasant and interesting experience than the traditional plaster impression, usually disliked by children. The young patient, together with his parent, can also see a virtual treatment plan on the screen before the overlays are produced, and in it his future smile. Such elements increase the attractiveness of the treatment in the eyes of the child and make him more willing and committed to participate in the implementation of the plan.
The overlays affect the teeth with high precision and relatively low force, which reduces pain and increases comfort, and thus does not discourage the child from treatment. A big plus is that the caps can be removed for brushing teeth and for eating, so the little patient does not give up any of his favorite foods. The overlays are comfortable, do not pinch, and are easy to take off and put back on. The makers of Invisalign First also made sure that the parent has control over whether the child actually wears the trays all day, rather than, for example, taking them off at school. Invisalign's transparent children's overlays have a blue wear indicator that fades when exposed to saliva. Treatment with the overlays can be further monitored with a special Dental Monitoring system.
Treatment with Invisalign First overlays can last several months. If necessary, at a later stage of development, after the eruption of permanent teeth, it is possible to use overlays of the second phase of treatment called Invisalign Teen designed for teenagers.
CA® CLEAR ALIGNER
Clear Aligner overlays feature a slightly different treatment philosophy from Invisalign®. With Invisalign and many other systems, you receive a set of overlays for the entire treatment at one time, so they are programmed based on the original scans and computer simulations. Clear Aligner treatment is done in stages, with subsequent overlays prepared after periodic checks of treatment progress and subsequent scans. Each stage of treatment is divided into three periods of about a week, after which the doctor evaluates the effects and gives the patient another set of overlays for another three weeks. The forces exerted on the teeth by the trays can be further assisted by flexible extractors and so-called Power Grips, which are glued to the teeth. The final stage of treatment, as with Invisalign and other systems, is the wearing of a retention splint to stabilize the achieved effect.
The Clear Aligner method works well in a slightly narrower spectrum of malocclusions than Invisalign, mainly for crowding of teeth or diastema, as well as other relatively minor orthodontic defects.
